What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur radio, also known as “ham radio,” is a hobby and service in which licensed individuals use designated radio frequencies to communicate with others locally or around the world without relying on the internet or mobile networks. Operators build, modify, and use radio equipment to send voice, text, digital signals, and even images across long distances. It is both a technical pursuit and a communication tool, often used during emergencies when normal communication systems fail. Amateur radio encourages learning about electronics, radio theory, and global communication, while also fostering a worldwide community of enthusiasts who connect purely for experimentation, public service, and enjoyment.
